Assessing the Impact of Fiscal Exonerations on Solar and Renewable Energy Equipment in Cameroon: Have Citizens Benefited Two Years Later?
Cameroon’s solar energy sector stands at a critical juncture as the 24-month customs duty exemption introduced in 2024 approaches its expiration. While the combination of VAT relief (in place since 2012) and the recent customs duty exoneration aimed to slash equipment costs—often subject to taxes up to 30%—and accelerate the country’s renewable energy transition, implementation challenges have threatened these gains. With the customs exemption set to end in December 2025, the solar industry awaits clarity on whether the forthcoming Finance Law will renew and permanently stabilize these fiscal incentives. The government’s National Energy Compact suggests a commitment to not only extending but broadening these measures, a move that could prove decisive for Cameroon’s ambitious target of achieving 25% renewable energy in its mix by 2035 and attracting the substantial private investment needed to power this transition.

Recreating Virunga Energies’ Model to Align Energy Supply with Market Demand for Sustainable Industrial Growth Across Africa
The Virunga Energies model offers a powerful blueprint for overcoming a common challenge in Africa’s energy infrastructure development: the mismatch between energy supply and actual market demand. While electricity is an essential utility, its value depends largely on the presence of sustainable, paying customers. In many parts of Africa, especially outside major industrial hubs, the challenge isn’t just building power plants but also ensuring there is a viable market to consume the generated electricity.
